Horror Film Posters Analyses

The colours on this poster are all very dark and gloomy, with the exception of the title. This is done so the title stands out. Also the title is in lights like fairground lights and you can see below is a load of zombies at a fairground; this could show a hint at a scene in the movie. The grey in the background is smoke coming from a fire in the bottom left hand corner. The fire could be symbolic of the world being taken over and basically being a huge disaster. The main characters are also on the poster as it is their story and we follow them throughout the movie. Props used in this poster are things such as guns, chainsaws and other dangerous objects; this is to show that they have to kill the zombies in dangerous ways for survival. The characters on the front are all dresses in dark clothing to add to the gloominess and stick to the colours of the rest of the poster. This colours show that this is a horror film. The fact the heading is in fairground lights and that there is a fairground located at the bottom of the poster shows that this isn’t a fully serious horror film that is also a comedy as well as a horror. The caption and the actors names are in white, this is so they show on the grey smoke background, and also because it ties in with the colours of ash and smoke. The caption on the poster “This place is so dead” could be used because the world has been taken over by the dead and also wherever they go, whatever place they are in there is always the dead around. The fount used on this poster isn’t a traditional font used in horror films, this again show this film isn’t just a horror it is also a comedy. Zombieland is set in America and was made in the year 2009 and has a running time of 88 minutes. The movie is about a boy trying to get his was to the state his parents live in, a man who is trying to find the last Twinkie and a pair of sisters trying to find an amusement park. This is where the fairground related references on the poster come from.

Mama was made in the year 2013 and is about the aunt and uncle of two young girls, who are faced with the challenge of raising them after they had been abandoned in the woods for five years alone, or what they thought was alone. The creature on the front is dresses in a dress that looks almost tree like and its skin is all dirty, this could show that she was also in the woods maybe caring for the children. There are moths on the creatures dress and also around them. This is an insect again found in the woods. The young child is standing behind the monster as if she is hiding from something and the monster is protecting her. The caption is “A mother’s love is forever” this could show that the creature is the children’s mother, and has been caring for them all the years that they were thought to be alone in the woods. The title “Mama” itself is in a fading font, this could be considered as creepy showing that this film is a horror. All the writing on the poster is in white; this is so it stands out and also fits in with the horror movie poster scene as most horror movie posters have the writing in white. White is an empty colour so it adds to the effect of being scared. At the top of the poster it says about another movie, this is so people have an idea who created this movie and an example of their previous work, so the audience can get an idea of how it will be made and what the movie will be like.

The girl who is sitting in the rocking chair is wearing a long white dress or nightgown; this could represent the innocents of her. This is because it stands out on the main colours used in the poster and it also catches the audience’s eye. At the top it gives examples of other movies the director of this one has directed to give the audience an idea of how it might be. The caption is “based on the true case files of the warrens” this is to show that this film is based on a true story and also to show again that it is a horror movie, also to maybe appeal to their audience and those who like the supernatural, and like to think it is real. The writing is all in capitals, this could be to stand out and show its importance. The font of the writing is bold and stands out, again to attract people’s attention.
